Employment Application

Responsibilities:

  • To provide professional and courteous wiring and repair service to cooperative members and other customers, in accordance with electric codes.
  • To provide customers with accurate information and advice on the proper methods of electrical wiring, and recommendations on proposed electrical installations, including estimated installation cost.
  • To provide advice to customers regarding service requirements and electrical safety.
  • To promote and encourage the use of electric power to make rural living easier and more productive.
  • To be familiar with all aspects of general operations, policies and objectives of the Cooperative.
  • To do all possible to achieve increased public and member understanding and support of the cooperative and the rural electrification program.
  • To protect and enhance the reputation and public image of the cooperative, its management and its employees.
  • To contribute, in every way possible, to high morale, to teamwork and in helping to achieve departmental and cooperative goals.

Reporting:

  • Reports to the Master Electrician.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with all departments and personnel, to ensure that courteous, efficient service is provided.

Responsibilities:

Wiring Material & Labor

  • Employee is personally responsible for providing professional electrical wiring and repair service to cooperative members and other customers, in full compliance with State and National Electric Codes.  Specifically, the employee will:
    • Personally install residential and farmstead wiring and commercial wiring under the supervision of a Master Electrician.
    • Understand and maintain knowledge of State and National Electrical Codes and stay current with code changes.
    • Load and assume responsibility for materials, tools and safety equipment to be used in the completion of assigned electrical work. Such responsibility includes accurate accounting for wiring materials used in the performance of the job.
    • Prepare job charge-out sheet, accurately accounting for materials, time and mileage to be charged to customer. Accurately complete time sheet and record mileage report daily.
    • Accept overtime assignments and emergency service calls after hours and on weekends, when needed.
    • List on "want list" all commonly used materials which he notes to be in short supply, but which can wait for truck delivery.  Report all materials needed for immediate delivery/special order.

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Specifically, the employee will:
    • Operate and perform necessary road maintenance of the vehicles assigned for his/her use. Keep the vehicle, as well as all materials and tools carried on its, clean, orderly and organized.
    • All vehicles, trailers, and trenchers to be inspected and serviced each day before use.
    • Personally perform minor repairs and report all conditions needing more extensive repair, or ordering of parts, to the Manager for approval.

Safety:

  • Employee is personally responsible for doing his/her utmost to maintain safe working conditions and a safe workplace.  Specifically, the employee will:
    • Operate and care for cooperative-owned tools and equipment, such as drills, cable fault locators, etc., in a safe and orderly manner at all times.
    • Follow all safety rules and proper operating practices while operating the cooperative trenchers and other vehicles.
    • Follow all safety rules and regulations, including wearing proper apparel (cotton uniform and leather shoes) and safety glasses, and safe operation of power tools, trenchers and other equipment, at all times.
    • Observe while operating cooperative vehicles, all traffic laws, safety rules and regulations; and use due care, considering weather and road conditions; as well as size of load and equipment being towed, when operating cooperative vehicles.
    • Report immediately all unsafe conditions or incidents which come to his/her attention.
    • Report all accidents of any kind, minor as well as major, immediately to the Manager.
    • Participate in cooperative training and safety programs and be able to perform first aid assistance or C.P.R. if needed.

Customer / Member Communication:

  • Employee is personally responsible to communicate with consumers in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Employee shall maintain a professional workmanlike manner at all times while on the job. No horse play, crude or vulgar language will bet tolerated. Specifically, the employee will:
    • Personally advise customers and make recommendations for the best way to complete the wiring project, complying with electrical code at all times. Keep customers/members informed of expected completion date and unexpected delays, if any.
    • Personally give accurate estimates of the potential cost of completing the proposed wiring project to customers.
    • Promote and encourage the use of electricity and electrical equipment.
    • Understand and communicate cooperative policies to customers/members in a manner which will enhance member/customer understanding and support of the cooperative and rural electrification program.
    • Avoid participating in conversations, or making remarks, on or off the job, which may be derogatory to the reputation of the cooperative, its management or fellow employees.
    • Keep confidential information, records, etc., which may be of a private nature, such as cost of job, condition of consumer premises, etc.

Employee / Management Communication:

  • Employee is personally responsible for keeping his/her supervisor informed as to the progress of his/her work, especially situations which require coordination with other employees and/or departments.
  • Employee will inform supervisor immediately, by telephone, if a job cannot be completed as planned, or before leaving the area after a job has been completed.
  • Employee is personally responsible for reporting to his/her supervisor any consumer concerns or complaints which may come to his/her attention.
  • Employee will maintain a professional work attitude, which at minimum requires courtesy and cooperation with supervisors and fellow employees.
  • Employee is personally responsible for contributing in every way possible to develop and maintain high morale, team spirit and enthusiasm within the department and throughout the organization.

Typical Physical / Mental / Environmental Demands:

  • Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking and climbing ladders; climbing and working on wooden poles with belt and hooks; and occasional bending, climbing stairs, kneeling, reaching, crawling, use of foot controls, turning valves, pushing/pulling up to 150 pounds, and lifting more than 50 pounds. Equipment used includes trenchers, truck/trailer combinations, hot line tools/barehand equipment, hydraulic tamps, drills, air operated tools, chain saws, and other associated equipment used in wiring installations. Requires finger dexterity, good color vision and hearing, and the ability to perform close work. May require working under pressure. Continuously working in areas of electrical risks and at heights of up to 50 feet; frequently in conditions of extreme heat or cold and dirt/dust; and occasionally around fumes, chemicals, vibration and noise.

Other Duties:

  • The employee shall be expected to perform other duties which may be assigned on an occasional basis, not limited to the following:
    • Delivering and installing equipment or other merchandise.
    • Performing equipment or motor repair.
    • Assisting with work normally performed by other departments.
    • In-office sales of materials to consumers.
    • Assisting with voltage investigations.
    • Ordering, receiving and stocking material.

About Us

Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative is one of 16 distribution cooperatives in North Dakota. It serves some 6,000 members on almost 4,700 miles of line in an area that stretches from the Minnesota border nearly to Ashley, and from the South Dakota border to Jamestown. From headquarter offices in Milnor and Edgeley, and outposts in Wahpeton, Oakes and Gackle, 43 employees work full-time to provide members with electricity and to improve the quality of rural life.
